I wrote up an awesome Gauntlet article on the Wildrose Alliance last week, but it was so contentious that it has been held over and is being reviewed by a lawyer. That’s how awesome it was. Since I have not heard back about it, I am just letting the Internet world know that sooner or later, this article is somehow going to make its way out to the Interweb.

When citizens get pushed back

While Plan It passed, it wasn’t the one that many citizen groups had hoped for. Back in June, we saw city council packed with people wanting to speak in favour of Plan It, but we also saw lots of developers wanting to voice their opinions.

In the end we saw a compromise on Plan It, one that the developers wanted. Citizen groups like Civic Camp and the Better Calgary Campaign sought for a more ambitious plan.

It’s sad to see that these people try and did not get what they want. What separates them from the developers is that these people volunteer their time and had no intentions of making profit. It really sucks to see them angry and upset over it.

However, the developers have a right to voice their opinions to make the profit. Essentially, they have a significant part to play when it comes to development, jobs, and influence. When you see the side with no money, all volunteers, and one with a positive plan to change Calgary lose though, it is still depressing.

Keep fighting the good fight. We’ll get there eventually.

My first Poli Talk

I got the chance to head down to Broken City for the first time and just talked politics at the Poli Talk event. I met JJ Sunstrum, a mayoral candidate I was with last time round and two individuals: Ken and Michael. Both were very awesome and I had a good time chatting about politics in general.

Too bad I didn’t get to talk to Zak Pashak cause I had to head out. Next time Zak!

When did Barker get exclusive access to Edmonton?

I’m reading an article about how Bob Barker and animal advocates met with zoo officials and some of Edmonton’s city councilors to discuss about Lucy the elephant. A question that comes to my mind is that how is it that Bob Barker, the greatest television host ever, gets access privileged access to councilors. I’m wondering if that would happen if just regular Edmontonians wanted to discuss something like this with their city council.

Just curious, because I know how it would turn out in Calgary.
